Yoga Life Institute is located in Devon, PA, a suburb of Philadelphia offers its community a couple of yoga teacher training courses. The studio is rich in tradition, and prides itself in its classical yoga lineage. It is the North American headquarters of the 100 Yoga Centers program sponsored by The Yoga Institute of India. Studio owner Dr. Bob Butera trained at the Yoga Institute of Mumbai with guru Dr. Jayadeva Yogendra in 1989, and his training shines through to his students and teacher trainees.
YogaLife Institute offers several teacher different teacher trainings. Its 200 Hr teacher training occurs over one year. It involves a large amount of self-study and practice, but one-on-one mentoring is also a vital element. Unlike many trainings, which take a set number of students, YogaLife’s teacher training is ongoing on a rolling application basis. Dr. Butera firmly believes that yoga is a theory-practice, so the teacher trainees spend a lot of time learning the fundamentals and then implementing them while assisting in classes.
YogaLife Institute also offers a 500 Hr advanced teacher training. Like the 200 Hr training, it is ongoing, but it lasts over the course of two years. The training delves into specialty teaching e.g. yoga for athletes and yoga for kids, as well as the connection between yoga and personal health. Another training this vast studio offers is a kids’ training. It is a two-day training, and it includes a CD of kids songs and a teaching manual. The kids’ training is eligible for continuing education hours through Yoga Alliance.
A sixteen-week meditation training runs in the winter. This training involves learning many different meditation techniques, specifically breath, mantra, visualization, contemplation, mindfulness, and conceptual meditation. Also, YogaLife Institute has a 300 Hr basic yoga therapy program. Trainees are required to participate in ten weekend workshops, and upon graduation, can work with patients with a variety of health issues.
